Like a book, an ASN document is strictly a top-down hierarchy, in that each parent (a level that contains lower levels) may have many children (a level that has levels above it), but each child may have only one parent. Many levels of depth are supported, so that each child – regardless of its position in the hierarchy – may in turn be the parent of many children of its own. Also, it is possible that the same information may be repeated as many times as might be required – just as a word, sentence, paragraph, or even chapter may be repeated more than once within a book. In 1995, when Edisoft was founded, while EDI was not new it was still not a “requirement” in many business circles such as it is today. EDI technology that was available to the SMB market at that time was very cumbersome, unreliable, and to put it simply, inadequate. Our goal back then was to provide a better EDI product that was directly integrated into clients ERP products to reduce a lot of the work that they were doing, increase their accuracy, and help them work smarter overall. Since that time EDI has matured, become a requirement in most business circles, and as part of this process has extended to many parts of our clients businesses other than simple orders and invoices.
The benefit of EDI extending too many parts of clients businesses is that we’ve had to find better and smarter ways to do things. We’ve accomplished some of this through the development of new products, some through the establishment of strategic relationships. While EDI has always been our core focus, many of these enhancements that we’ve made have been able to benefit our customers with their non-EDI needs, or have extended to new customers that do not have any EDI needs at all. AS2 – which stands for “Applicability Statement 2” – is a method of exchanging documents directly between trading partners without the need to have a third-party go-between like a VAN to carry the documents. More and more companies are outsourcing the storage and shipping of their products to Third Party Logistic companies (3PLs), also known to us as Remote Warehouses. This could apply both to companies that have their products manufactured overseas (who may have all of the products handled by a 3PL) and companies that manufacture their own products. Some of these companies will outsource some of the storage and shipping of their products in order to maintain warehouses in multiple parts of the continent. Continue reading
